Wire terminals serve as the critical junction points in electrical systems, facilitating secure and efficient connections between wires and devices. They come in various types of junction between wire and terminal, including crimp, solder, IDC and screw terminals, each designed for specific applications and wire types.
Crimp Junction
Crimping is a method of joining two or more pieces of metal or other ductile material by deforming one or both of them to hold the other.
An electrical crimp is a type of solderless electrical connection which uses physical pressure to join the contacts. Crimp connectors are typically used to terminate stranded wire. Stripped wire is inserted through the correctly sized opening of the connector, and a crimper is used to tightly squeeze the opening against the wire.
Solder Junction
Soldering is a process of joining two metal surfaces together using a filler metal called solder. The soldering process involves heating the surfaces to be joined and melting the solder, which is then allowed to cool and solidify, creating a strong and durable joint.
Electronic soldering connects electrical wiring to devices, and electronic components to printed circuit boards. Electronic connections may be hand-soldered with a soldering iron. Automated methods such as wave soldering or use of ovens can make many joints on a complex circuit board in one operation, vastly reducing production cost of electronic devices.
IDC Junction
An insulation-displacement contact (IDC), also known as insulation-piercing contact (IPC), is an electrical connector designed to be connected to the conductor(s) of an insulated cable by a connection process which forces a selectively sharpened blade or blades through the insulation, bypassing the need to strip the conductors of insulation before connecting.
Screw Junction
A screw terminal is a type of electrical connection where a wire is held by the tightening of a screw. Featuring a screw-down mechanism to fasten wires, screw terminals are known for their simplicity and ease of use. They allow for easy adjustments and are reusable, perfect for temporary setups or prototypes.
